🌅 Devotional for the Day
For many centuries, the church has been waiting for the second coming of Jesus. Even the first Christians lived with this hope: The Lord is coming. Today, we confess the same truth. Yet precisely because time continues to pass, a question may arise in our hearts: Why has Jesus not yet come? Has God forgotten His promise? Has His plan been delayed? Is the long wait a sign of uncertainty?
Peter answers this question clearly. The Lord is not delaying His promise. What people perceive as a delay is patience in God’s eyes. God is not slow, indecisive, or forgetful. He is merciful. He does not keep history open because He lacks power, but because His heart desires to save. Every additional day is a day of grace.
This truth changes the way we view the waiting. The time before the second coming is not empty. It is not meaningless. It is not merely a postponement of the end. It is a time of grace. People are to come to know Christ, repent, receive forgiveness, and be prepared for the kingdom of God. God’s patience is not indifference toward evil, but an expression of His saving love.
This does not mean that sin, suffering, and injustice will continue forever. The Bible is clear: The day of the Lord will come. God’s patience does not cancel His justice. But before the end comes, He is still calling. He warns, invites, opens doors, moves hearts, and provides opportunities for repentance. The coming King waits not out of weakness, but out of grace.
For us personally, this verse presents a serious yet comforting question: How are we using the time God is still giving us? Do we live indifferently, as though everything will continue forever? Or do we recognize that every day is an invitation to draw closer to Christ? God’s patience should not make us spiritually sleepy, but grateful, watchful, and ready to repent.
✨ God’s Patience Is Salvation
When God waits, He does not wait without a purpose. His patience has a saving purpose. He does not want anyone to perish. These words reveal God’s heart to us. The Lord takes no pleasure in the destruction of human beings. He calls us to repentance because He desires to give us life.
Ellen G. White wrote:
“Soon the heavens will open and our Savior will appear. No human eye will fail to see this.”
— Maranatha, p. 287
This assurance remains firm. The heavens will open, and Christ will appear. Until then, however, God’s patience is an open door. The Savior is still calling. The Holy Spirit is still working. People may still return home to God.
🌿 Waiting Without Indifference
There is a dangerous kind of waiting that becomes indifferent. We may grow accustomed to the words “Jesus is coming again” without allowing them to truly shape our lives. We know the promise, but our hearts become sluggish. Peter calls us out of this attitude. God’s patience is not intended to prolong our comfort, but to make our repentance possible.
Therefore, the question is not only when Jesus will come, but how we live before Him today. Is there something God wants to put in order within our hearts? Is there a decision we keep postponing? Is there someone we should forgive? Is there a habit that is weakening us spiritually? God’s patience gives us time, but this time is sacred.
🕊️ A Time of Grace for Us and for Others
When we understand that God’s patience is grace, it also changes the way we see other people. We do not become harsh, impatient, or self-righteous. We recognize that others also need time, light, repentance, and God’s mercy. This time of grace is not only for me, but also for people who do not yet know Christ or who still live far from Him.
Therefore, a church waiting for the second coming of Jesus should not merely calculate, observe, or debate. It should call, love, serve, and bear witness. As long as God continues to exercise patience, His people have a mission. The message of Christ must be shared clearly, lovingly, and urgently.
The Lord is not delaying. He is faithful. His promise remains certain. Yet His patience shows how deep His love is. Therefore, this day is not simply another day on the calendar. It is a gift of grace. A day to repent. A day to draw closer to Christ. A day to bring hope to someone else. A day to live watchfully because the King truly is coming.

Dear Father in heaven,
Thank You for Your patience and Your great grace.
Help me not to spend the time before the second coming of Jesus in indifference, but to understand it as a sacred time of grace.
Show me where I need repentance, cleansing, and renewed devotion.
Give me a watchful heart that does not take advantage of Your patience, but responds to Christ with gratitude.
Use my life to share the hope of the coming Savior with others.
Amen.
